Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common condition that affects the digestive system. It causes symptoms such as a change in stool type and frequency, stomach cramps, abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhoea and / or constipation.
IBS-C is constipation predominant, IBS-D is diarrhoea predominant, IBS-M is a mix of both constipation and diarrhoea. In all types symptoms come and go, lasting for days, weeks or months.
Although not life-threatening, IBS can be frustrating to live with and have a big impact on your quality of life.
How common is IBS?
IBS affects 10% of adults in the UK. Around 79,000 cases are diagnosed each year, although many people with symptoms may not seek medical advice. It often affects people in their 20’s and 30’s, with almost twice as many women as men having IBS.
